Funny thing happened today. Out of the blue I was given some photos from our Paddling for Pints adventure last summer. Also included in the package was a video of the event. I didn't even remember that it was captured on video! As a result, here are a few photos of our spontaneous pedal/paddle to Tides Tavern in august of 2010.
So are you ready to paddle with us this summer? While the date has not been set we do intend to paddle again this August. Check back on this blog for announcement of the event date.

It was on February 2nd at about 3:20pm. The whales were headed north, and not near us but closer to Vashon Island. There were about 2 dozen of them porpoising along at a rather slow pace. Behind was, I think, a research vessel keeping back a bit as to not crowd the Cetacea Delphinidae. Sorry, no pictures this time.

With a crowd of about 50 in attendance about 18 individuals entered the water during this years swim. Frigid temperatures did not keep our polar bears out of the water! The water temperature was 44 degrees, the air was in the 30's On the other hand the sun was shining, no wind, and we didn't have to chip our way through ice to get to the water!

While the swim was going on, before and after too, those witnessing the swim feasted on what may be known as "a taste of Point Richmond beach." There was traditional chili, turkey soup, corn chowder, hot buttered rum, hot cider, and a dessert spread that made you want to swim just so you could have more! And I'm just scratching the surface of what there was available to eat!

Just in case you were wondering... a small group of volunteers, and I stress that these were strictly "volunteers," did a test paddle to Gig Harbor on August 17 2010. This " test" consisted of paddling or pedaling a kayak or stand up board from our beach all the way to Gig Harbor non-stop. After the first 4.5 miles pint paddlers did require a break, being forced to stop in at Tides Tavern for re-hydration and other nourishment. Comments like "this beer is really good" and "we should do this every day" were heard around the table. The group continued floating West and found themselves offshore while The Coats, a Seattle based Capella group, performed at Skansie Park All but one that set out on this test paddle were able to complete the journey - more on that later! This journey ended at the Gig Harbor public boat launch where a kayak trailer awaited man powered boaters for drive back home.
As for the other paddling adventure, I'm sure that Jack S. will be happy to explain his accidental night time journey that apparently took him.. elsewhere.
If anybody else has ever dreamed of attempting a similar journey talk to Donna, Cristina, Leslie, Joyce, Steve, or or Jack about their experience.
Would you like to paddle for pints? You can do it too! Ask about when the next pod leaves for the harbor!
PS Since no one has provided Photos you'll just have to imagine what the journey was like on that calm and clear 80 degrees day.

A record 14 brave, or were they just crazy(?) swimmers completed the 4th annual crossing between Vashon Island to Point Richmond Beach. 65 people in all, attended the August 6 fundraising swim. A total of 130 food items were contributed, $380 raised for the local FISH food bank. Two "semi purest" swimmers swam the mile despite the fact that they wore no swim fins (noted below), not total purests though because we all wore wet suits didn't we? 13 year Daniel R. completed the mile and is now the youngest swimmer we know of to swim from Vashon Island to Point Richmond Beach! Thank you to all who contributed, donated, boated, paddled, swam, cooked, set up, cleaned up, ate food, showed up, joined in and otherwise made this years swim the best swim ever!

It finally happened. In the wee hours of August 5 2009 the neighborhood well pump stopped pumping water.Neighbors seemed to take notice the problem almost immediately. At least six calls were put in to Washington Water complaining of no water before 7am. The pump had last been replaced in 1978 putting it about 15 years overdue for replacement. Water was restored to the system by about 2pm that day. It was noted that the old pumps intake screen was clogged which may have contributed to the unwanted debris found in our water over the last several years. The clogged filter may also have put a strain on the pump assisting in the pumps breakdown.
Some statistics of interest: The new pump is 50% more powerful at 3 HP, has a stainless
impellor as opposed to plastic and has an output of 40 gallons per minute, the new pump is warranted a full 30 years - 15 more than the old one (the old pump apparently did not know this). The well was found to be 69' 3" deep and had 10 ' of standing water - which is a good supply.
Pictures show; well crane. closeup of old well pump, neighbors and crew gathered at the well.

Below are the Official Times for the 2009 swim for the "Cold" vos Passage Rough Water Swim" as Recorded by Christy Bortel, the event timekeeper were as follows:

Kids Swim (distance about 200 yards):
Daniel Rees 6:31 Gig Harbor
Rees Parrish 7:06 Charlottesville, VA
Julia Rees 10:48 Gig Harbor
Survivor 1 Mile Swim :
Steve Rees 28:07 Gig Harbor
Tesa Johnson 30:21 Fox Island
Brett Walter 32:47 Olalla
Rondi Thornton 32:54 Albuquerque, NM
Carol Parrish 35:30 Charlottesville, VA
Jim Gates 39:38 Tacoma (no fins) (did 1/2 marathon that morning)
Peter Bortel 40:37 Gig Harbor (Climbed Mt Rainier the day before)
Scott Huntington 43:33 Gig Harbor
If food variety and quality is any indication of success then this was the best passage crossing ever! Additionally, new records were set as surface conditions were optimal and more swimmers opted to use swim fins. This is the first time that the 30 minute mark has been broken for the 1 mile event. 1 mile swimmers are shown in finishing order left to right above.

After the swim we all gathered for a feast of chili, corn bread, fruit salad, cake, flan, and many other delicious dishes!
Thanks to all the neighbors and friends who helped out in the water and on land to make this event safe and enjoyable!

The Importance of Being Warm at "The Pit"
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Below is "Team Brower," father and son known for their unparalleled ability to keep the fire warm when family or guests are being entertained at the pit. Todd and father, Al, are pictured here at their special firewood "prep" site at an undisclosed tax free location. The site is where the right wood is chopped into just the right length and shape in order to achieve maximum heat along with another desired outcome; minimal smoke.
